EESC has a new Acting Director

From the end of August Dovilė Šukytė became the Acting Director of Eastern Europe Study Center. The change occurred due to EESC Director Linas Kojala winning the Fulbright scholarship and leaving to Harvard University, USA.

Baltic Security Situation: A Short Overview September 19, 2016, 11:54

Here we represent the text by EESC intern, which overviews the Baltic Security Situation though the perspective of relevant geopolitical events. The paper analyzes: which regional security threats are foreseen, which strategies to eliminate these threats are implemented and which questions are left behind the boundaries of discussions. The first part overviews two main factors of the threats to security: traditional military aggression of Russia and the company of hybrid war implemented by Kremlin. The second part shortly overviews the actions causing danger to security which are usualy ignored in the dominant discourse: it is economical, political and social climate of Baltic states as well as the lack of tri-pary cooperation.

L. Kojala is the new Director of EESC July 04, 2016, 18:16

Linas Kojala has been named the new Director of Eastern Europe studies centre, starting from the July 1st, 2016. He replaces Acting Director dr. Laurynas Kasčiūnas, who will pursue a career in politics, though will stay in EESC as a Senior Analyst for the time being.

International conference “Strengthening of the Social Resilience to Hybrid Challenges in the Baltic region” March 03, 2016, 12:44

The representatives of EESC have participated in the international conference “Strengthening of the Social Resilience to Hybrid Challenges in the Baltic region”, where the influence of rift between Russia and the West, and the threat to Baltic countries were discussed. The participants of the conference expressed concern and signed a call for strengthening cooperation between Baltic countries, Poland and Ukraine, with the emphasis on determination of threats from Russia and development of deterrence instruments.

International Security Experts Conference "Eastern Partners in European Security and Defence - Putting EU Global Strategy into Practice"

On 27 of September 2017, EESC together with Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence and partners organized the third annual International Security Experts Conference “Eastern Partners in European Security and Defence - Putting EU Global Strategy into Practice”.

The focus of the Conference was on security environment in and around Europe, as well as on ways to take forward EU engagement with Eastern Partners in security and defence. The invited participants reflected on partner countries’ contribution to EU crisis management efforts, as well as on the possibilities for the EU to support resilience of Eastern Partners, their security sector reforms and capacity building efforts. The Conference gathered government officials, members of civil society, as well as security and defence experts from six Eastern Partnership countries, European Union Member States, and representatives of the EU institutions.

On October 24th, during the 72nd anniversary of United Nations, Eastern Europe Study Centre, together with Swedish Institute, Swedish Embassy in Lithuania and Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs are organizing UN simulation “Vilnius Model UN 2017”. Model UN has long-lasting traditions, being organized for the first time in 1949 and from the beginning raising the future leaders of countries and international organizations. Among them, there was Former Secretary General of UN, Ban Ki Moon, as well as US Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, National Security Advisor in the Obama administration Thomas Donilon.

The 2nd Global Belarusian Meeting was held in Vilnius

On July 4-5, the Second Global Belarusian Meeting took place in Vilnius. Aim of the meeting was to strengthen the cultural and historical ties between Lithuania and Belarus, discuss the urgent issues and possible solutions. Three discussions were held during which Lithuanian and Belarusian scientists, publicists discussed the common history of Lithuania and Belarus, sought to find out the consequences of the Soviet period for the states and find out their assessments, as well as the audience was introduced to the peculiarities of Belarusian culture in Lithuania and with the Belarusian Diaspora problems in Lithuania and the rest of the world.
