Prominent human rights defender from Cuba Jorge Luis García Pérez, also known as “Antuanez”, who was arrested and beaten by the security officers on the 9th of June, was released today in the morning.
However, the charges against him of “spreading false information, resistance, assault and contempt” still stand. It was reported that he is physically in “bad shape” but “in high spirits”. His family and those close to him believe his release was a direct result of the international pressure and they appreciate quick reaction from NGOs and governments!
We would like to remind you, that on the 13th of June the Eastern Europe Studies Centre together with other 12 European NGOs called for immediate release of Antúnez. You can find more information on that HERE.
